State Rep. Cam Cavitt on Friday introduced a resolution urging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to send Michigan National Guard troops to the U.S. – Mexico border. The resolution comes after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott requested assistance for the border crisis through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, of which all 50 states and several U.S. territories are members.

At least 19 other states have sent National Guard troops to address the crisis. Florida has provided additional resources like drones and watercraft.

“The crisis at the southern border has gotten so far out of control that other states now must step in to clean up the federal government’s mess,” said Cavitt, R-Cheboygan. “This is more than just a national security disaster. It’s a humanitarian crisis. The Michigan National Guard is trained and equipped to help manage the hundreds of thousands of people still flooding over the border. I’ve heard from hundreds of people who want to see Michigan be a part of the solution, there’s no reason we can’t make that a reality.”

The dangers of the border crisis reach far beyond southwest border communities. Multiple illegal aliens have been arrested for violent crimes in Michigan in recent months, including murder, soliciting sex with a minor, and sexual assault.
