State Rep. Sarah Lightner, R-Springport, today was named chair of the House Judiciary Committee for the 2025-26 legislative term by Speaker Matt Hall.
Lightner, a fourth term representative from Springport, brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to public safety and judicial reform to her new role.
“Being entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the House Judiciary Committee is an incredible honor,” Lightner said. “I want to thank Speaker Hall for his confidence in my leadership and vision. It’s time to refocus on policies that back our law enforcement, hold criminals accountable, and protect Michigan families.”
The chair announcement was made at a press conference Wednesday afternoon, where Hall and Lightner were joined by law enforcement from throughout the state, including Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette, Calhoun County Sheriff Steven Hinkley and Calhoun County Prosecutor Dave Gilbert.
“The Judiciary Committee plays a critical role in making sure our laws reflect the needs of the people we serve and the officers who put their lives on the line every day,” Lightner said. “We will prioritize measures that support law enforcement, strengthen public safety, and hold criminals accountable. Our communities deserve to feel safe and protected, and I’m committed to ensuring law enforcement professionals have the support they need to do their jobs effectively.”
Lightner’s career has been dedicated to the legal field and public service. Before joining the Legislature, she worked as a paralegal specializing in criminal defense and family law. In 2015, she was appointed by then-Gov. Rick Snyder to serve on the Criminal Justice Policy Commission. She also served as judiciary and public safety chair for the Michigan Association of Counties during her tenure as a Jackson County Commissioner.
As a state representative, Lightner has been a leader in juvenile justice reform, spearheading the adoption of the state’s Juvenile Justice Task Force recommendations. She has also led efforts to address Michigan’s trial court funding challenge.
Lightner said she looks forward to working with stakeholders and the judicial branch to ensure public safety and smart criminal justice reforms.
