Rep. Schmaltz: Michigan families need a break from high gas prices

Schmaltz backs gas tax holiday; it shouldn’t cost you so much at the pump

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz is backing a plan to ease the burden rising fuel costs have placed on Michigan families, commuters, and small businesses.

Schmaltz, R-Jackson, recently co-sponsored a measure to suspend the state portion of Michigan’s gas tax to help lower prices at the pump.

“As families continue stretching every dollar to cover groceries, housing, and everyday expenses, higher gas prices are making life even harder,” Schmaltz said. “People in our communities should not have to choose between filling up their tank and paying for other essentials. This plan would provide meaningful relief right away.”

House Bill 5966 would set the state gas tax to zero cents per gallon on gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels.

Under the proposal, the suspension would take effect immediately after the bill is signed into law and would remain in place until either Nov. 1, 2026, or until the nationwide average gas price drops below $3.50 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Michigan drivers are currently paying 52.4 cents per gallon in state fuel taxes. For someone filling up a 15-gallon tank, this plan could save them nearly $8 each time they stop for gas.

As of May 26, average gas prices were $4.71 per gallon in Jackson County and $4.67 per gallon in Washtenaw County, the communities Schmaltz represents. Nationwide, Memorial Day weekend gas prices were the highest they have been in four years, according to AAA.

“For most people, driving is not optional, and families are feeling sticker shock every time they pull up to the pump,” Schmaltz said. “Parents still have to get their kids to school and activities, workers still have to commute, and farmers and small business owners still have to operate. Suspending the gas tax would help ease some of that financial pressure.”

House Bill 5966 has been referred to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
