State Rep. Jamie Thompson, of Brownstown, is highlighting an essential component to the health and well-being of people throughout Michigan with a resolution declaring the week of May 6-12 as Nurses Week in the state.

“Nurses are the foundation of health care. They deliver care, comfort and compassion for people and families throughout our communities every single day,” Thompson said. “While this week is officially National Nurses Week through designation, we should be deeply appreciative of the services these professionals provide year-round. Whether it’s critical care or other day-to-day roles that help people across our communities improve their health or live a more comfortable life, nurses are there.”

There are more than 100,000 registered nurses in Michigan, according to state statistics – accounting for roughly one of every 40 jobs.

Thompson, who is a licensed practical nurse specializing in wound care, administrative nursing, long-term acute care and sub-acute care, also said the resolution illuminates the staffing crisis that hospitals are facing, with many thousands of registered nursing jobs vacant statewide.

“These unfilled positions and an overall decline in support staff means nurses are responsible for more shifts and hours – including on weekends or late into the night,” Thompson said. “This can lead to burnout and fatigue. It’s important to bring awareness to this concerning trend and recognize the vital roles these hardworking and lifesaving professionals have in our state.”

Thompson’s resolution, HR 251, was adopted by the Michigan House on Wednesday.
